Is there such thing as an affordable laser cutter or cutting-mail? Problems with architectural models …?

I have to build models constantly for my architecture class, and I can not understand how laser cutter would be desirable. I'd like something that could connect to your computer, draw shapes and are cut from thin wood or plywood. I know laser cutters are expensive, but there's this craft cutter in the model is now called the Cricut. You can see what im talking about here if you do not know what it is .. This clearly http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog_old.jsp?CATID=166365 only scraps of paper and it seems cuts only pre-set things. But my question is, is there anything out there that is relatively inexpensive (under $ 500) to cut custom shapes from wood or heavy cardboard? Thank you!

Do not be lazy! All that went through the architecture school had to build a ton of garbage models. It is a skill that is very satisfying and really miss their construction. The hand-building process is also valuable in the design process. As you build to them, play with different aspects and could find something that best fits your design. Do not wimp out!
