Safest water pipe for human health?
What’s the best material to use for water supply pipe (inside a home) in terms of human health? I know PVC is a no-no, and there’s a big controversy in California regarding PEX. But what about copper vs. polyethylene? And in terms of flexible tubing, is PE and HDPE the same thing? I’m interested in a material for water-supply line to a refrigerator. Thanks!
i’d opt for copper as long as you do not run cabonated water thru it (that will get you sick)… there are flexible copper pipe, usually put on water heaters

Pex Piping: A Great Option For Your Home
PEX Piping, also known as PEX tubing are plastic plumbing pipes that have gained so much popularity that they are almost exclusively the choice of residential homeowners when it comes to choosing piping for their homes. Listed below, you will read about some of the numerous benefits to PEX Piping.
Easy to Install
PEX piping is easy to install because it uses less fittings and require less fixtures than copper piping. PEX plumbing installations require fewer fittings than rigid piping. In fact, the flexible PEX tubing can turn 90 degrees without the need for elbow fittings, and PEX tubing unrolled from spools can be installed in long runs without the need for coupling fittings. They are also light weight and much easier for plumbers to work with (compared to copper piping) which cuts down on the installation time. There is also much less of a mess during installation in that there is no cutting of copper, just a simple and clean installation. PEX is also safer to install since a torch is not needed to make connections.
Cost Effective
Less installation tome means less labor cost which equals a money savings for you. The material itself of PEX piping is less expensive than copper piping, another reason that makes it so cost effective to install it in your home.
Resists Buildup & Freezing
PEX pipes resist the type of buildup often found over time in copper pipes. Another great feature that makes PEX pipes so functional is that they resist freezing better than metal pipes.
Energy Efficient
PEX tubing does not transfer heat as readily as copper, and so it has energy conservation capabilities.
Not for the outside
While PEX pipes will resist freezing in the indoors, they cannot stand the frigid temperatures of some outdoor climates which is one reason they are not recommended for outdoor use. The other reason is that PEX pipes cannot be exposed to UV light, because it can break down the material and cause it to fail.
