Variable speed switch in our fireplace insert fan stopped working. Can I replace with a voltage regulator?

If you can not use a common regulatory change type of a switch I need? I want to keep the variable speed option.

hardware store should have a switch three position (is the engine really have fixed or variable speeds?), a dimmer custom work, because the motors are inductive rather than resistance. attenuators work by reducing the voltage to the load, but the engines need full voltage all the time or burn up. a special switch (rheostat) is required to control the motor speed is variable. some dimmer switches are resistors, but not all
